Chicken and Dumplings Made Easy
The key to any chicken recipe is patience. When you cook chicken to fast, it will get tough and no one likes to eat tough chicken. For our chicken and dumplings, we want delicious, tender chicken morsels in every bite. Therefore, we opted to use a crock-pot.
There are all kinds of variations on classic chicken and dumplings but this simple recipe strives to be uncomplicated. At its core, this recipe contains a delicious chicken broth, heavy cream, cream of chicken soup, chicken breast, green peas, carrot, celery, sharp cheddar, and canned biscuits.
Speaking of canned biscuits, you’ll want to use the buttermilk biscuits for the old-fashioned flavor. If you want to make your own biscuits you can do that as well.
We purchased the canned biscuits that are already cut into sections. You simply need to roll each section thin and then cut them into squares. Wait until the very end (about an hour before the finish) and top the biscuit squares to the top of the crock-pot and cover.
How to make Chicken and Dumplings in a Slow Cooker
Slow cookers or crock pots are great because you can make large quantities of food that can be enjoyed for several days, frozen for later, and the ability to heat up for quick lunches or dinners. Spending just a few minutes with food preparation and then throwing it all together allows you to go about with the rest of your day.
For this easy chicken and dumplings recipe with canned biscuits, the chicken only needs to cook for 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low. We chose to cook on high and the chicken was still tender and juicy and easy to shred.

Cheesy Crockpot Chicken and Dumplings Recipe with Canned Biscuits
If you're like me, you love amazing comfort foods that remind you of home. This crockpot chicken and dumplings recipe with canned biscuits won't disappoint.
- 10.5 oz cream of chicken soup
- 32 oz chicken broth low sodium
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3 Boneless Chicken Breasts
- 1/2 cup sharp cheddar shredded
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 1 cup carrots chopped
- 1/2 cup celery chopped
- 1/2 tbsp parsley chopped
- 1/2 tbsp chives
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1/2 can canned buttermilk biscuits
Trim fat off of 3 unfrozen chicken breast.
Add chicken to a crock-pot along with chicken broth, cream of chicken soup, heavy cream and set to high.
Chop carrots, celery, chives, salt and pepper, and parsley and add to the crockpot
Cover for 4 hours.
Shred 1/2 cup of sharp cheddar cheese and add to the crock-pot.
Thinly flatten each buttermilk biscuit and cut in squares
Add each square to the top of the crock-pot and cover for another hour.
Do not stir the biscuit squares and check after an hour. Allow more time if necessary or until the biscuits have puffed up.
